SubClass Of: receiving process

Class Hierarchy

Definition

receiving process in which some material product, raw material, material component, or material artifact is received by an agent bearing a recipient role, and that includes as occurrent part an appraisal process in which the received material entities are assessed against some requirement specification, however informally that specification is communicated

Explanatory Notes

  1. The requirement specification that is input to the appraisal part need not be a document. A verbal instruction concretized in an agent’s memory qualifies, since information content entities are medium-indifferent. Advance shipment notice, purchase order and transfer order content are typical but not required sources; where they occur, the appraisal input is the requirement content they carry (line items, quantities, condition criteria), not the document as a whole. Criteria are required; paperwork is not.

  2. The appraisal part must take the received material entities themselves as input. Without that condition an appraisal with some other object (a safety audit, an operator review) occurring within the same receiving process would satisfy the definition. Editor’s note: the anonymous appraisal expression in this class’s restriction is repeated in the first-order axiom of goods receipt. The two must be kept identical; see the corresponding note there.
  3. Automated receiving, in which delivered goods are identified and counted by scanning against an expected manifest, is a logistics receiving process: the manifest content is the requirement specification and the automated identification and count is the appraisal.

  4. The restriction requiring an agent bearing a recipient role is entailed by receiving process and is retained here for readability.

Examples

  • a warehouse receiving a pallet delivery, counting the cases and checking their condition against the advance shipment notice; a plant receiving steel coil and verifying gauge and quantity against the purchase order line items; a stockroom receiving components from internal stores and checking them against the transfer order

Counter-Examples

  • a receiving process in which goods are signed for and shelved without any check against expected quantity or condition (a receiving process, not a logistics receiving process); a receiving process during which a dock safety audit is performed (the appraisal does not take the received goods as input)

Primitive Class

This class is declared primitive and it does not have necessary and sufficient condiftions defined.

Primitive Rationale

An appraisal episode may occur incidentally within a receiving process without the process being organized as criteria-directed receiving; that intentional structure is not formalizable, so necessary conditions are given.
