Definition
designed function of a material artifact or engineered system that is realized in a material location change process in which some material entity other than the bearer, and not a part of the bearer, is moved from one location to another
Explanatory Notes
-
The bearer may itself move (a truck) or remain fixed (a pipeline); what matters is that its realization moves something other than itself.
-
The function is possessed by design and may be realized in material handling as well as in transportation; the means of transport role, not this function, is what is specific to transport processes.
-
Contrast with material containment function, whose realizations hold rather than move. The conveyor and forklift examples are deliberate: both bear this function and neither bears a means of transport role when used within a site.
Examples
- function of a truck to carry cargo over roads; function of a locomotive to haul a train; function of a container ship to carry containers; function of a pipeline to convey crude oil; function of a conveyor to move grain from silo to plant; function of a forklift to move pallets
Counter-Examples
- material containment function of an intermodal container; support function of a warehouse rack; transportation business function of a carrier
Primitive Class
This class is declared primitive and it does not have necessary and sufficient condiftions defined.
Primitive Rationale
Function types are individuated by the kinds of process they are disposed to be realized in; sufficient conditions would require quantification over possible realizations, which is not available in FOL or OWL. Necessary conditions on actual realizations are given.
