Definition
equipment role held by a material artifact or engineered system whose material transport function is realized in the transport process in which the role is realized
Semi-Formal Definition:
every instance of βmeans of transport roleβ is defined as exactly an instance of βequipment roleβ that βhas realizationβ some βtransport processβ p and is βrole ofβ some βmaterial artifactβ or βengineered systemβ that βhas functionβ some βmaterial transport functionβ that βhas realizationβ that same process p
Explanatory Notes
-
βEquipmentβ is used in the IOF Core sense: an artifact whose function is realized in the process and which is not consumed by it. The bearer of a means of transport role is the artifact that does the moving; it is distinguished from the bearer of a transport equipment role, which holds, protects, secures or supports cargo. One artifact may bear both roles, as a tanker does.
-
The definition requires actual realization: an artifact designated in a plan as the means of transport for a future transport process does not thereby bear the role. This is narrower than the βplanned to be involved inβ wording of equipment role in IOF Core. The OWL axioms give necessary conditions only, because OWL cannot express that the role and the bearerβs function are realized in the same process; the first-order logic definition is the authoritative one.
-
The term follows UN/CEFACT and WCO usage, where a means of transport is distinguished from transport equipment.
Examples
- role of a semi-tractor pulling a loaded trailer; role of a locomotive pulling freight wagons; role of a container ship carrying containers; role of a cargo aircraft; role of a pipeline conveying crude oil; role of a bicycle used to deliver goods
Counter-Examples
- role of a trailer pulled by a tractor (transport equipment role); role of a truck undergoing maintenance (maintainable material item role); role of a forklift moving pallets within a site (equipment role in a material handling process)
