SubClass Of: equipment role

Class Hierarchy

owl:Thing β€Ί bfo:entity β€Ί bfo:continuant β€Ί bfo:specifically dependent continuant β€Ί bfo:realizable entity β€Ί bfo:role β€Ί equipment role β€Ί transport equipment role

Definition

equipment role held by a material artifact or engineered system that is used to hold, protect, secure or support cargo in the transport process in which the role is realized

Explanatory Notes

  1. β€œEquipment” is used in the IOF Core sense. The bearer of a transport equipment role holds, protects, secures or supports cargo; it is distinguished from the bearer of a means of transport role, whose material transport function effects the change of location. A trailer or rail wagon bears a transport equipment role; the tractor or locomotive pulling it bears a means of transport role. One artifact may bear both roles, as a tanker does.

  2. Where the bearer is a container, the role is typically realized together with the bearer’s material containment function; containment is one way of holding cargo, not the only one. A pallet supports; straps secure; a tarpaulin protects.

  3. The scope follows GS1’s definition of transport equipment as equipment used to hold, protect or secure cargo for transportation, and UN/CEFACT’s distinction between transport equipment and means of transport.

Examples

  • role of an intermodal container loaded for sea freight; role of a pallet on which cases are stacked for shipment; role of a ULD in air cargo; role of a trailer pulled by a tractor; role of a rail wagon pulled by a locomotive; role of load straps securing a machine on a flatbed

Counter-Examples

  • role of the tractor pulling the trailer (means of transport role); role of a container used for on-site storage (not realized in a transport process); role of a forklift loading the trailer (equipment role in a material handling process)

Primitive Class

This class is declared primitive and it does not have necessary and sufficient condiftions defined.

Primitive Rationale

Holding, protecting, securing and supporting are distinct functions for which IOF Core currently provides no constructs; necessary conditions are given.
