Explanatory Notes

Continued Process Verification is the third stage of process validation and extends beyond initial validation by embedding continuous monitoring and analysis into routine production. Manufacturers collect and evaluate data on critical process parameters, material attributes, quality attributes, and performance indicators to confirm that the process operates within established limits. This ongoing activity enables early detection of variability, supports statistical trend analysis, and provides the basis for corrective or preventive actions. Regulatory authorities, including the FDA and EMA, view CPV as a key element of lifecycle management ensuring consistent product quality throughout commercial manufacture.

Examples

  • During commercial monoclonal-antibody production, data on pH, dissolved oxygen, viable-cell density, and metabolite concentrations are trended across batches. Statistical analysis confirms that the process remains within expected variation and that no drift occurs.

Counter-Examples

  • Generating a one-time validation report at the end of process qualification without further data collection is not CPV, because it does not provide ongoing assurance of control.
