Materials bearing this role may act by modifying viscosity, forming protective films, reducing damaging gas-liquid interface effects, or otherwise modulating bubble and interface dynamics. 2) The protected material is commonly present in a liquid or multiphase material such as cell culture medium, fermentation broth, formulation buffer, suspension, or process intermediate. 3) The role may be borne by a single substance or by a formulated mixture whose protective effect arises from bulk material behavior
