quality of a material entity that is the extent to which a particular constituent of that material entity, or a particular quality of that material entity, is uniformly distributed throughout that material entity
Explanatory Notes
Homogeneity is always relative to what is being evaluated, such as a particular analyte, particle size fraction, moisture content, pH, osmolality, or optical density. When homogeneity concerns a quality, what is evaluated in practice is the uniformity of the values or observable manifestations of that quality across the material. The same quantity of material may be homogeneous with respect to one constituent or quality and heterogeneous with respect to another, because different constituents or qualities can vary differently across the material. For example, a powder blend may be homogeneous in total mass fraction of a salt but heterogeneous in trace element distribution; a reconstituted medium may be homogeneous in bulk pH but heterogeneous in dissolved gas concentration immediately after mixing.
