Definition

aggregate state of a material entity in which the constituent material parts are sufficiently constrained in their relative motion that the material entity has a definite volume and resists continuous, fluid-like flow

Explanatory Notes

Solid aggregate state should be distinguished from particulate flow. A powder, granulated material, or bead population may flow as a bulk material because its discrete solid particles or particle aggregates can rearrange relative to one another during pouring, shaking, mixing, or transfer. This kind of particulate flow does not mean that the material entity bears a fluid aggregate state. Fluid-like flow, in this context, refers to continuous deformation of a material as a connected liquid, gas, or plasma, rather than motion produced by rearrangement of separate solid units.
